Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov.29 / Trend, M.Aliyev /

The United States condemns the recent murder in Baku of journalist Rafiq Tagi and extends its deep condolences to Mr. Tagi's family, friends, colleagues and readers, the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan said in its statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, like all murders, this reprehensible crime requires justice and such freedoms are essential parts of every healthy democratic system. "We welcome the formation by the Government of Azerbaijan of a special working group to investigate the attack on Mr. Tagi and urge it to devote all necessary resources to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice," the statement says.

A criminal case was filed under article 126.1 (intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm) of the Azerbaijan's Criminal Code.

It was found that on November 19 an unknown person repeatedly stabbed Rafig Tagiyev who was returning home from work. It happened near the house where he lived Tagiyev. The attacker managed to escape the scene.

After Tagiyev's death in hospital on November 23, the case was reclassified to the article 120.1 (premeditated murder). The investigation is continuing.

Tagiyev's murder case is under special control of the President of Azerbaijan.
