Baku is hosting the international conference "Modernization Policy: New Economic and Ssocial Challenges" organized by the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

After Azerbaijan restored independence, it achieved great success in its development, deputy chairman and executive secretary of the ruling party, MP Ali Ahmadov said at the opening of the conference today.

He said that one of the biggest achievements was the fact that Azerbaijan was able to protect itself from the global financial and economic crisis in 2008.

"Poverty, which occurred in the country as a result of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, has declined from 49 percent to 8 percent," he said.

He said that the financial and economic crisis led to serious social changes in the world.

"The number of candidates pretending for the world's financial resources increased," he said. "Despite the fact that the economic crisis is behind, its negative impact is still felt. However, these effects can not be attributed to Azerbaijan."

Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Social and Political Department Chief Ali Hasanov read out the Azerbaijani President's greeting to the participants.

The purpose of the conference is to discuss the world socio-economic problems and to seek the solutions based on international cooperation and expansion of partnership between countries.

The representatives of more than 30 countries and heads of international organizations European People's Party and the International Conference of political parties of Asia Wilfried Martens and Jose de Venecia attend the conference.

Two voluminous reports will be delivered at the conference. The discussions will continue at the meetings in the four panels.
