Georgian President: Visit to US is strategic breakthrough

Georgia, Tbilisi, Feb 13, Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili summarized his visit to the U.S. at a meeting with the parliamentary majority on Monday. He said it was a significant visit from many points of view, starting from the level of the meeting organized by officials to the attention of the press.

"We have never had a meeting at such level. But the most important for us is that it was a strategic breakthrough in the direction of the U.S. and in terms of strengthening international positions of Georgia," he noted.

The president singled out two main issues in these meetings: start of the debate on free trade with the United States and the fact that for the first time in the history the United States will help Georgia to increase defense capability.

"During next few weeks a team will arrive to Georgia from the U.S., we will create a high-level format for the preparation of a free trade agreement with the United States. This is a long process, and the economy of Georgia will have a new source of investment, particularly taking into the account the fact that no one else in the region, even in Europe, has no such trade relations with the biggest market in the world. Aid to Georgia in increasing its defense capability is also very important, and this process is also designed for years. These two themes are a truly strategic breakthrough," Mr Saakashvili said.

He noted obtaining financing for the construction of the Batumi University of Technology and modernization of schools was also very important.
