On March 31, 2012, Azerbaijani-Americans will commemorate the 94th anniversary of the Soyqırım, known also as the March Days or the Azerbaijani genocide, Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC) reported.

From March 30 to April 2, 1918, the armed units of Armenian Revolutionary Federation with support of Soviet Bolsheviks carried out mass killings of Azerbaijanis in the city of Baku and its surroundings. According to the New York Times, close to 12,000 Azerbaijani civilians were massacred during the four tragic days of 1918.

The 1918 March Days set the start of a vicious cycle of ethnic cleansing acts carried out against Azerbaijanis throughout the 20th century. These acts resulted in killings and forced displacements of over 1.5 million Azerbaijanis from their historical homelands in Southwestern Caucasus. On this occasion, since 1998, March 31 is officially marked in Azerbaijan as the Day of Soyqirim (an Azerbaijani term for genocide).
