PACE Monitoring Committee adopts document on Azerbaijan

At a meeting of the Monitoring Committee of PACE in Strasbourg after discussions a document on the implementation of commitments undertaken by Azerbaijan was adopted, a member of the PACE Monitoring Committee, Elkhan Suleymanov, told Trend on Tuesday.

At a meeting Elkhan Suleymanov praised the document prepared by the co-rapporteurs as fully reflecting the moments that exist in Azerbaijani society. Suleymanov said the co-rapporteurs in this paper along with concern in relation to specific issues, tried to show the progress made to date in these areas and stressed the need to hold discussions with the authorities on possible measures to improve the situation.

Co-rapporteurs of the Monitoring Committee Pedro Agramunt and Joseph Debono Grech from January 31 to February 2, 2012 were on an assessment mission to Azerbaijan, said the MP. During a visit the co-rapporteurs met with the minister of justice, prosecutor general, the head of President Administration, chairman of Supreme Court, chairman of Parliament, the Ombudsman, the leaders of parties represented in the Parliament. They visited the homes of refugees and internally displaced persons, and exchanged views with Deputy Chairman of State Committee on Refugees and internally displaced persons.

During the visit, the co-rapporteurs also met and held discussions with a number of NGOs and representatives of the media, leaders of opposition parties not represented in the Azerbaijani Parliament.

The co-rapporteurs prepared a document on the outcome of the assessment visit, and presented it to the Monitoring Committee of PACE.
