Azerbaijani ruling party: Opposition’s desire to hold rally in centre of Baku doomed to failure

Azerbaijan, Baku, May 3/ Trend, I.Isabalayeva /

All the necessary conditions have been created in Azerbaijan for freedom of assembly.

Opposition members hold their rallies when they want, but their desire to organise their actions in the centre of Baku is doomed to failure. Ruling New Azerbaijan Party deputy chairman and executive secretary Ali Ahmedov stated this on Thursday commenting on an intention of the so-called Public Chamber of opposition to hold a rally in one of Baku's central areas on May 6.

"The executive power has made its decision on holding rallies. I believe that no matter where a rally will take place but much importantly, how it will be supported by people is the key issue. Anywhere in the world people fight not for venue of a rally, but for attracting more people to this rally," Ahmedov said.

He said this is so the organisers can demonstrate public support. Azerbaijani opposition rallies are organised by 35-40 parties and at most 500 people.
