Azerbaijani citizens detained in Iran plead not guilty in court

Azerbaijani nationals Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizade on Tuesday spoke at the first sitting of the court in Tabriz, and pleaded not guilty and that they do not acknowledge the charges against them, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

Azerbaijani nationals Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizade detained in Iran spoke at the first sitting of the court in Tabriz on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

At trial, the Azerbaijani citizens were asked about the purpose of their visit to Iran. They said they arrived in Iran to participate in a festival of poetry and have not committed any crimes.

The judge has not formally filed any charges against the arrested and has not even said under what specific article Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizade are accused. He said the court will give judgment in the coming days.

Two officials of the Azerbaijani Consulate General in Iran attended the sitting of the court.

The citizens of Azerbaijan, Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizade, were arrested in early May without giving a reason, and only after nearly three months they were charged with intent to commit a crime.
