MP: No need to change conscription system in Azerbaijan today

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 15 / Trend, I. Izzet /

A particular system can be created in the Azerbaijani army for a family's only child, deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on security and defense Aydin Mirzazade told Trend on Tuesday, commenting on proposals to not call up a family's only son.

"This practice is seen around the world, and I believe that this is possible to implement here. But society should not feel that we will pay special attention only to only sons in the family. Today, the Azerbaijani government pays attention to every soldier, taking care of their health and safety, regardless of whether he is an only child or has several brothers ", Mirzazade said.

He said demographic statistics must be considered firstly.

"We need to know the number of only children and only sons in our society. If they compose a majority, it will be impossible to take such a position, as it will reduce the army's fighting capability, leading to a serious reduction in the number of troops. This will weaken Azerbaijan's defense capacity", he said.

Azerbaijan has sufficient conscription legislation. Therefore it does not need to be changed or improved, rather, the public needs to be more informed about the legislation, Mirzazade said.
"There is no need to change the conscription system. A young man who has reached the age of 18 years and is fit for military service can be called up until the age of 35. The conscription system in Azerbaijan meets all modern requirements. As a result of high discipline in the army, we give a fitting rebuff to the aggressor. Moreover, the public controls all information associated with the army", he said.

The Azerbaijani conscription system and medical commission ensure conscription of exceptionally fit conscripts. A young man is called up to the army only if his health allows, Mirzazade said.

"Sometimes, information is disseminated on the death of a young soldier from disease during military service. This is an exception rather than a regular occurrence. The military prosecutor's office holds very serious investigations on each such occasion. If negligence on the part of the military's medical commission is proven, those responsible for this are very seriously punished", he said.
