Number of districts in Tbilisi increase to ten
Georgia, Tbilisi, Jan. 25 / Trend N.Kirtskhalia /
The number of regional administrations in Tbilisi increased from six to ten. The decision was made at a meeting of the sakrebulo of the capital (electoral authorities) on Friday.
During the discussion, MPs from the opposition Freedom faction left the meeting room. According to the chairman of the faction, Irakli Shahiashvili, the number of local administrations is increased in order to employ the former ruling United National Movement party members that are out of work.
Head of Legal Services of the City Hall, Irakli Abesadze said that the division of Georgia into ten administrative units aims at making the work of government more efficient.
MP from the National Movement, Koki Ionatamishvili said that the decision would not affect the city budget.
"The City Hall has proposed to split administrative units. That is, if previously there was Vake-Saburtalo district, now we will have two separate Vake and Saburtalo districts. This is due to the fact that most of the decisions are to be taken immediately and it may only be achieved by districts administrations. For example, Gldani-Nadzaladevi district serves approximately 350,000 citizens of Tbilisi, what naturally slows down this process," Ionatamishvili said.
According to him, 470 people were employed in administrations of the six districts, and emergence of the new districts will only add 70 employees to that number.
