Turkey plans to replace the F-16 fighter with domestically produced fighters by 2023, the Secretary of the Defense Industry of the Ministry of National Defence of Turkey Murad Bayar said, Anadolu agency reported on Thursday.

Turkey plans to replace the F-16 fighter with domestically produced fighters by 2023, the Secretary of the Defence Industry of the Ministry of National Defence of Turkey Murat Bayar said, Anadolu agency reported on Thursday.

According to Bayar, since last year, Turkey has been implementing a project to develop a model for a Turkish fighter. It is expected to complete the full preparation of the primary structure of the fighter within two years.

As for the timing of the start of fighter's operation and cost of the project, Bayar said these details will be announced later.

Producing fighters is part of the state program aimed at ensuring the Turkish army with arms, equipment and outfits of own production. Currently, Turkey has achieved 54 percent self-sufficiency in this sector.

Turkey recently announced the creation of the domestic tank Altai, UAV ANKA and Şimşek and other defence products.
