The head of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has blamed the U.S. and its allies for the Syrian crisis.

Speaking at a news conference in Damascus on Monday, Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Washington and its regional allies who supply weaponry and funds to insurgents fighting the Syrian government, are responsible for the killing of innocent Syrians.

He said despite claims on human rights and combating terrorism, the US has a double standard policy regarding Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine and Pakistan.

In those countries, Washington promotes terrorism, he explained. Boroujerdi stressed that the Syrian army is heavily defending Syria and doesn't need the support of friendly forces.

The Iranian MP also noted that the best solution for Syria is to keep President Bashar al-Assad in office until the end of his term in 2014 and hold free elections afterwards.
