A decision was made to launch a new phase of negotiations between Turkey and the European Union, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Tuesday, TRT Haber TV channel reported.

"We were able to agree on the consideration of the next technical item within the negotiations for joining the EU," Davutoglu added. "This decision is very important in the context of the need to advance the talks."

The Minister said that the matter rests on the 22nd item in the negotiations which will be considered in the near future. Turkey also intends to obtain consideration of the 23rd and 24th items, he said.

According to Davutoglu, EU membership for Turkey is one of the main directions in foreign policy.

The official negotiations on Turkey's accession to the EU started in 2005. The parties have not begun considering any new technical item for the past three years. At the moment, Turkey was able to finish the negotiations on only one of the items.
