Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 10 / Trend /

Special coordinator and head of the OSCE short-term observation mission Michel Voisin has issued a statement in connection with the presidential election in Azerbaijan today.

Voisin stressed that despite all controversy and problems related to the certain details, the election results, confirmed by surveys, have clearly determined a winner. The number of presidential candidates, an electoral campaign on TV available for all candidates, voter turnout over 72 percent, the Central Election Commission's well-organized electoral process and transparency, along with participation of specialized observation organizations, created the opportunities for democratic development.

The OSCE representative said that it is the fourth time that he participates in elections in Azerbaijan as an observer.

Voisin believes that the election was transparent, free and fair, and in this respect he fully supports the statements of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.

According to the head of the mission, the abovementioned points have not been reflected in the report of the ODIHR, and this report does not reflect the positive aspects noted by the observers of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and short-term observers.

Voisin said he has issued this statement for his words not be used in the wrong direction.

Presidential election was held in Azerbaijan on October 9. According to the preliminary results announced by Azerbaijani Central Election Commission after the processing of ballots from all polling stations, the Head of State, candidate of the ruling the New Azerbaijan Party, Ilham Aliyev won the election, gaining 84.55 percent of votes (3,126,612 votes).
