Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 17 / Trend E. Mehdiyev /

The Russian law enforcement bodies' inadequate measures and an inciting effect of the local media can evoke a boomerang effect, head of the Public and Political Issues Department of Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov told Trend today.

He was commenting on the charges on Orkhan Zeynalov in connection with a crime committed in Moscow and related issues, which have been under discussion for several days.

"Regardless of a person who committed the crime, it must be investigated in line with the country's legislation," he said. "The offender must be held accountable and appropriately punished."

"But this process must not be a push to restrict business of other foreign citizens, the rights of people living and working legally in this country, and to shape a negative opinion about them in the local community," he said.

"I would like to stress that the activity of law enforcement bodies, harsh treatment, and violence used while detaining a person suspected of committing a crime, open showcase of this person online and in the media can't be explained in terms of common logic," Hasanov said.

He went on to say that Russia is a multi-ethnic country, where representatives of many peoples have been living and working together for many centuries.

"Only balanced national policy, national and religious tolerance can be successful in multinational countries. Proceeding from the history, breaking this balance leads to problems and upheavals in these countries. Therefore, there's no place for rhetoric in multinational societies, which results in an erroneous signal for inter-ethnic relations. Such harmful tendencies as racism, discrimination and xenophobia must be timely prevented," Hasanov noted.

According to Hasanov, Azerbaijan is also a multinational country, such as Russia. But an offender's nationality and ethnicity have never been a topic of discussion in Azerbaijan. Any attempts that could harm national and religious tolerance were strongly thwarted here.

He voiced his confidence that the inadequate measures undertaken by Russian law enforcement bodies in this case, and the local media's inciting position can cause a boomerang effect and may cause unfavorable processes in Russian society," the official said.

Hasanov expressed hope that Russian people and government will suppress such dangerous provocations of certain circles and such trends to national factions will not penetrate into the layers of the Russian society even deeper.
