Open debates on the Middle East were held at the UN Security Council under the chairmanship of Azerbaijan, the country's permanent mission to the United Nations told Trend today.

According to the information, at the meeting UN Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman elaborated on the innovations in the Middle East peace process.

Representatives from 60 countries including 15 members of the Security Council, Palestine and Israel delivered speeches during the discussions.

The importance of continuing Palestinian-Israeli negotiations was stressed during the discussions. The threat of the Syrian conflict for the whole region, contradiction of the settlement policy in the Palestinian territories to international law and the importance of holding the Geneva- 2 meeting to resolve the conflict through a dialogue was also stressed.

Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev, who presided over the meeting, said that the parties' commitment to the negotiation process is important to achieve real results. The process must be carried out within the relevant regulatory standards and reflected in the UN Charter and international law regulation to achieve success.

It was also emphasised there is a need for continued support of the international community to improve the economic, financial and humanitarian situation of Palestinian land.
