Last night shooting took place between Iranian border guards and a group of armed people in the direction of the city of Saravan located in the south-east of the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan.
The group was trying to enter the country from Pakistan and 17 Iranian border guards were killed at shooting range, Iranian news agency Fars reported on Saturday with the reference to an anonymous source.
According to the information, five Iranian border police officers were wounded in the skirmish. Four police officers were taken hostage.
The preliminary information said the incident was committed by terror groups operating against the Iranian regime, the agency said.
