By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend: Turkey's humanitarian assistance for Syria has amounted to $979 million, Turkish newspaper Sabah reported today.

According to the newspaper, at present, Turkey provides 96 world countries with humanitarian aid to the amount of $1.40 billion.

Head of the Turkish Office for the Prevention and Emergency Management (AFAD) Fuat Oktay said earlier that the number of Syrian refugees living in Turkey has reached 300,000.

According to Oktay, over 181,000 people are living in camps set up by the Turkish government for Syrian refugees. Moreover, more than 100,000 refugees have settled in the border provinces of Turkey where they live outside the camps.
During the conflict in Syria, which began in March 2011, over 115, 000 people were killed and over 4.2 million have become refugees in Syrian territory as well as two million having fled to neighbouring countries. The main burden of receiving refugees lies on Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The total population of Syria before the conflict amounted to 20 million.
