Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine appointed the MP from the oppositional Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party, Arsen Avakov Acting Interior Minister of Ukraine, RIA Novosti reported. Avakov was one of the leaders of opposition activities during the protests and riots in Kiev.

Avakov was the only candidate for this post, his candidacy was supported by 275 of 324 MPs present in the boardroom.

Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Alexander Turchinov said before the voting that Avakov has been appointed temporarily, till the formation of the coalition government.

The Rada earlier on Feb.22 adopted a decision on the restoration of the 2004 Constitution. Turchynov said that it allows the Rada to form a government without the participation of the president.
