Trend:

Istanbul Court for Grave Crimes has decided to release the former head of Turkey's General Staff Ilker Basbug, Turkish Anadolu news agency reported on March 7.

Yesterday Turkey's Constitutional Court expressed its attitude to the non-consideration of solicitation filed by Basbug's lawyer to the lower instance court for changing the restraint measure, which envisages an arrest.

"Non-consideration of solicitation filed by the lawyer to the lower instance court is considered as a violation of personal freedom and the right to security," according to the court's decision.

On August 5, 2013 the Turkish court sentenced the 70-year-old former head of Turkey's General Staff, Ilker Basbug to life imprisonment under the case on the Ergenekon organization's military coup attempt.

The court recognized the Ergenekon organization, which was involved in a military coup attempt in Turkey in 2006, as a terrorist organization.

Ilker Basbug and a number of senior Turkish servicemen were sentenced to life imprisonment.

General Basbug resigned in 2010.
