Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree pardoning 170 people on May 26.

The decision on pardon was made after the appeals of a number of prisoners, their family members, the Commissioner for Human Rights, the Organization for Human Rights, addressed to the President of Azerbaijan, were considered taking into account the personality, health status, marital status of prisoners, their behavior while serving their sentence and proceeding from the principles of humanism, according to the presidential decree.

Some 157 people sentenced to imprisonment, and two sentenced to conditional sentence were pardoned.

One person was released from correctional work and 11 - from the penalty in the form of a fine.

It should be stressed that journalist Faramaz Allahverdiyev is also among the pardoned.

Moreover, 13 Iranian citizens, one citizen of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Belarus are also among the pardoned.

The decree will enter into force upon signature.
