Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept.19

By Ilkin Izzet - Trend:

European Parliament resolution on human rights in Azerbaijan is prejudiced and biased, the Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Chairman of the Yeni Azerbaijan ruling party Ali Akhmedov said in a statement posted Sept.19 on the website of NAP.

Such an influential body of Europe made the mistake of supporting the initiative of some members pursuing their own personal interests, he said.

He noted that each deputy of European Parliament is well informed about the rapid development of Azerbaijan in recent years, the welfare improvement of the people of the country, the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms.

"Many of them had repeatedly been in Azerbaijan. Another reality that European parliamentarians are familiar with is the violated rights of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs as a result of the occupation policy of Armenia. Unfortunately, the authors of the resolution don't submit any claims for the protection of their rights and return to their homes," Akhmedov said.

The Deputy Prime Minister called it unfair that the charges against Azerbaijan on the basis of distorted, untrue facts were put forward by the organization that remained indifferent to the violation of the rights of more than one million people for over 20 years.

The right should not be sacrificed for political expediency, Akhmedov noted.

Commenting on the resolution, he said that Azerbaijan has been cooperating with the EU in the implementation of various projects.

"But this cooperation does not entitle the European Parliament to put forward unfounded accusations towards Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is an independent state, and it has the right to decide its own fate. The pressure and interference in internal affairs of Azerbaijan put forward by some members of the European Parliament is inadmissible," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
