Baku, Azerbaijan, June 22

By Seba Aghayeva - Trend:

Azerbaijan's accomplishments in every field, its increasing strength and global stature, the big success of the European Games currently underway in Baku despite the orchestrated smear campaign, as well as other achievements continue to worry the Armenian lobby, Consul General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles Nasimi Aghayev told Trend June 22.

Aghayev was commenting on the protest action of the Armenian Youth Association of the United States of America in front of the Consulate General of Azerbaijan.

The ludicrous protest action held by the radical Armenian lobby in front of the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles speaks volumes about how desperate and perplexed this special interest group has become," Aghayev said.

"Furthermore, as the world becomes more exposed to the truth about the illegal military occupation and brutal ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijan's lands by Armenia, this lobby is panicking even more," he said.

"Especially, the recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights regarding this occupation and ethnic cleansing has had a cold shower effect on Armenia and its lobby in the U.S. So, in order to distract the world's attention from this ruling, as well as from the flagrant human rights abuses in Armenia, and the tremendous damage inflicted upon the present and future of the Armenian people by a notoriously corrupt Armenian government, the American-Armenian lobby resorts to such ridiculous steps," he said.

"But the lobby should understand that they won't be able to achieve anything with it. As the adage goes, "the lie has short legs"," he said.

The Armenian Youth Association of the United States of America held the protest action in front of the Consulate General of Azerbaijan.

On 16 June 2015, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights announced its judgment (Merits) on the case of Chiragov and others v. Armenia (Application no. 13216/05).

The case originated in an application against the Republic of Armenia lodged with the Court on 6 April 2005 by six Azerbaijani nationals forcibly displaced from the occupied Lachin district of Azerbaijan during the Armenian aggression.

The Republic of Armenia bears full international responsibility for the breaches of international law that have occurred and continue to occur, the statement said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
