Latvia supports a peaceful settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the norms and principles of international law within the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, State Secretary of Latvia Andrejs Pildegovics said.

He made the remarks at the meeting with Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov, the press service of the defense ministry reported July 3.

The secretary of state said that Latvia has always supported the fair position of Azerbaijan in a number of international, as well as various European organizations, and stressed that this position remains unchanged.

Zakir Hasanov expressed gratitude to the Saeima of Latvia and all the Latvian people because they made an appeal on the genocide committed by Armenians in Khojaly.

The Latvian side was informed about the futility of negotiations to settle the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, about the fact that unconditional withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied Azerbaijani territories, as required by UN Security Council resolutions, is not carried out, and other issues.

The sides expressed satisfaction with the development of cooperation, including relations in the military sphere between Azerbaijan and Latvia, stressed the importance of expansion of cooperation in other areas.

At the meeting they discussed issues of Azerbaijan's participation in international peacekeeping operations, resolute opposition to separatism and international terrorism, which are a threat to both countries, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.
