Trend:

Despite the agreement to cease hostilities, the units of Armenian armed forces continue to exacerbate the situation along the entire contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, said Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry in a message Apr. 14

Junior Sergeant Rustam Ahmadov, serving in Azerbaijan's army, was killed Apr. 14 at the line of contact while suppressing another Armenian provocation.

"Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry extends its deep condolences to the family and friends of the killed," read the ministry's message.

"The Defense Ministry states that the responsibility for the bloody provocation on the line of contact lies entirely on the military and political leadership of Armenia and the retaliatory strike on the enemy will be devastating," according to the message.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
