Ilham Aliyev, his spouse meet Azerbaijani Olympians

President of Azerbaijan, President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev has met with the athletes who competed in the 31st Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and their coaches

President of Azerbaijan, President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev has met with the athletes who competed in the 31st Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and their coaches.

The Azerbaijani president, his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva and family members were warmly welcomed by the meeting participants.

The head of state made a speech at the event.

Then, President Aliyev’s orders to award members of the Azerbaijani national Olympic team were read out.

The head of state presented “Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan”, “Taraggi” medals, “Shohrat” and “Service to Motherland” orders to a group of athletes and their coaches for their contribution to the development of sports in Azerbaijan and their high achievements in the 31st Summer Olympic Games.

In their addresses to the event, Firdovsi Umudov, senior coach of the Azerbaijani freestyle wrestling team, Elchin Zeynalov, personal coach of the Rio Olympics silver medalist Togrul Asgarov, coach of the men’s national taekwondo team Elnur Amanov, judo fighter and the Rio Olympics silver medalist Elmar Gasimov, wrestler and the Rio Olympics silver medalist Mariya Stadnik thanked the head of state for his great attention to development of sports in the country.

President Aliyev also met with Zabit Samedov, who sealed World Boxing Council (WBC) Muaythai world title at a tournament commemorating the first president of Chechen Republic Akhmad Kadyrov in the city of Grozny, and congratulated him on his victory.

Afterwards, Azerbaijani president, Olympians and their coaches posed for photos.
