Azerbaijan awaits reply from Armenia on thousands of Azerbaijanis who went missing during first Karabakh war

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 29. Azerbaijan still waiting for the answer from Armenia concerning the fate of nearly 4,000 Azerbaijanis who went missing during the first Karabakh war, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova said at a meeting of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States (IPA CIS) dedicated to the IPA’s 30th anniversary, in Kazakhstan’s Almaty, Trend reports.

She congratulated the meeting participants on the 30th anniversary of establishing the IPA CIS and wished the organization further development and progress.

Gafarova noted that the IPA was a platform for sharing legislative practices in the political, legal, economic, humanitarian and other fields.

According to her, despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has engulfed the world for the past two years, the Parliament has continued its activities within the IPA.

"Members of our delegation took part in face-to-face and online events of the assembly and were represented in the leadership of separate commissions," Gafarova stated.

She also talked about the new realities in the South Caucasus formed as a result of the liberation of Azerbaijan’s territories from the Armenian occupation. The speaker outlined that new prospects for peace and cooperation emerged in the region during the post-conflict period.

"Azerbaijan, being a supporter of peace, remains committed to the implementation of the provisions of the trilateral statement signed by Azerbaijani, Russian and Armenian leaders on November 10, 2020. Azerbaijan expects Armenia to fulfill its obligations under this statement," Gafarova said.

She stressed that Armenia should demonstrate a constructive approach to this issue and make efforts to normalize relations based on mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of international borders, as well as the restoration of all economic ties and transport communications in the region.

In her opinion, this is the only way to achieve peace and stability in the region.
