Azerbaijani FM meets with EU Special Envoy for Eastern Partnership (PHOTO)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 17. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov received a delegation of the European Union led by EU Special Envoy for the Eastern Partnership Dirk Schuebel on November 17, the Foreign Ministry told Trend.

The delegation includes officials of the European Union and a number of Eastern Partnership member states.

According to the information, during the meeting, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stressed that Azerbaijan-EU relations, which are characterized by positive dynamics, are developing successfully, the country is interested in developing cooperation with the EU within the framework of the Eastern Partnership, both in bilateral and multilateral formats. The allocation of a financial package in the amount of 2 billion euros by the EU to the country was especially noted, the importance of the initiative to create a high-level working group to jointly determine and prioritize future investments was emphasized.

The Foreign Minister touched upon the energy dialogue between Azerbaijan and the EU, covering oil, gas and renewable energy sources, and stressed the importance of a memorandum of understanding on a strategic partnership in the field of energy, which provides for doubling gas supplies to the EU. Stressing that the existing trade turnover between Azerbaijan and the EU is satisfactory and there is great potential for further cooperation, the minister spoke about the possibilities for further increasing the turnover.

Speaking about the post-conflict period, the Foreign Minister touched upon the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the delimitation of borders, the opening of communications, and issues on the peace agenda. Along with other efforts, the activity of the President of the Council of the EU in creating a constructive environment between the two countries was noted. The meeting also provided information on the existing mine threat and emphasized the importance of the efforts of the European Union and Member States to eliminate it.

The head of the EU delegation, speaking about the growing role of Azerbaijan as an energy supplier against the backdrop of today's geopolitical realities, highly appreciated the country's contribution to the diversification of the EU's energy supply, strengthening the access of European consumers to uninterrupted, affordable and clean energy. Also at the meeting, confidence was expressed that the normalization process between Armenia and Azerbaijan would pave the way for broader cooperation within the framework of the Eastern Partnership.

At the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the modernization of the Eastern Partnership, new opportunities, as well as other topical issues.
