PRESIDENT OF TURKISH CYPRUS HAILS A WOULD-BE RAPPROCHEMENT WITH AZERBAIJAN

Turkish Cypriots are waiting specific moves to proceed from statements by Azerbaijan’s President ILham Aliyev on de facto recognition of the Turkish Republic of the Northern Cyprus (TRNC), writes the influential Turkish daily Sabah.

In his interview with the newspaper, on July 1, TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat highlighted Aliyev’s words concerning the opening of direct air communication between Baku and Lefkosha (Turkish Nicosia).

“[We see] important moves, important decisions. I hope that all countries in the world would follow by taking similar steps towards putting an end to the isolation of the Turkish Republic of the Northern Cyprus,” Talat said, stressing the necessity of moving ahead with the realization of “positive statements.”

“Certainly, Baku’s permission to the opening of direct air flights to the Turkish Republic of the Northern Cyprus is of great importance for us,” he concluded.
