SEMINAR ON WOMEN AS ELECTORS AND CANDIDATES TO MP STARTS IN BAKU

A two-day workshop �Women as electors and candidates to MPs’ started in Baku Wednesday.

Organized through joint efforts of the State Committee on Azeri Women’s problems and the General Directorate on Human Rights of the CE Equality Section the event focused on exchange of opinions on the implementation of

European Union (EU) Committee of Ministers recommendations dated 12 March 2003 “On balanced participation of men and women in public and political decision making”

According to Zahra Guliyeva, the chairman of the State Committee on Women Problems, the participation of women in public and political life of the country is not so big. Only 14 of 125 MPs are women, or 11% in correlation.

В"Despite tremendous work done in Azerbaijan over the past few years in the sphere of gender equality, there still exist problems, while EU support will enable to accelerate their resolution,” she underlined.

In her turn, administrator of the Human Equality Section of the EU General Directorate on Human Rights, Daniela Levi-Pцesh, delivered a paper providing a comprehensive estimation to the recommendations by the EU Ministerial Committee, noting that the EU will make an active support to the development of gender program in Azerbaijan.
