UNESCO FOCUSES ITS ATTENTION ON ISSUE OF DESTROYED AZERBAIJAN’S CULTURAL MONUMENTS UNDER ARMENIAN OCCUPATION

UNESCO will focus its attention on destroyed cultural monuments of Azerbaijan under the Armenian occupation, the UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura stated during the briefing upon arrival in Baku on the official visit on 23 August, Trend reports.

According to him, the organization intends to pay a special attention to the issue. “UNESCO is very sensitive to the issue of ruining the material and cultural heritage in any part of the world”, he added. He voiced confidence, that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be settled by peaceful way.

The UNESCO Secretary General highly appreciated the current level of cooperation with Azerbaijan. This collaboration acquired a special nature after the commencement of the activities of the first lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva as the UNESCO Good Will Ambassador. He assessed highly her role in the protection of non-material values in Azerbaijan.

One of the instances of the cooperation of the sides is inclusion in 2003 of the Azerbaijan Mugam and the Icheri Shaher (the Old City) into the worldwide list of the non-material heritage, he said. Speaking of the comprehensive cooperation Matsuura noted, they achieved very positive changes.
