830 sq km of areas in Azerbaijan mine-strewn

There are 830 sq km of mined areas in Azerbaijan, Nazim Ismayilov, the Director of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), told Trend .

According to Ismayilov, during its activities from 1998 to 2005 in Azerbaijan ANAMA has demined 21 million sq m of areas, rendered safe 11,704 mines and unexploded ordinances. Over the past 12 years approximately 400 people died as a result of 1500 facts of mine blast. Ismayilov said that every they fix 20-25 facts of mine blast.

The head of ANAMA said that the 2006 budget of the organization comprises $4.4m, of which $800,000 falls on the Azerbaijani government, $2.3 million the United States, 1.1m euro on the European Commission, $200,000 UNDP, $780,000 NATO and 260,000 euro DFID. Over 2006 ANAMA will have to demine 11 million sq m of area, including Saloglu project.

ANAMA intend to expand its technical and personnel potential, Ismayilov said. This year is planned to acquire one more mine-cleansing machines, 12 mine-detecting dogs and improve the personnel, he underlined.
