The delegation headed by the leader of the Congress of the local and regional authorities of the Council of Europe Giovanni di Stazi met on 13 February with the chairman of the Central Election Committee (CEC) of Azerbaijan Mazahir Panahov, CEC told Trend .
The CEC chairman said during the meeting that Azerbaijan has been cooperating since 1999 with the Congress of local and regional authorities of the Council of Europe. Panahov informed of the CEC current composition and formation of the election committees.
Di Stazi noted CEC plays an important role in democratization of Azerbaijan. He said, he had got familiar with the efforts of the leadership of Azerbaijan to establish the legislative base meeting the international standards and assessed highly establishing favorable conditions for activities by CEC in 125 constituencies. The official from the Council of Europe took interest in the date of the elections to municipalities, the results of which were cancelled after their holding in 2004.
The CEC chairman noted, holding elections to Milli Mejlis in 2005 made it impossible to hold by-elections on municipalities, the results of which are considered invalid. Panahov said the issue will be resolved till autumn.
