Within the Russias Days in Azerbaijan Kirsan Ilyumjinov, the President of FIDE, arrived in Baku with official visit and met with the Azerbaijani chess-players.
First of all the guest gave a report on the work done at FIDE over his ruling and voiced hope that he would be elected for new presidential period, Trend reports. Several days ago Russia nominated my candidacy for the post of the head of FIDE. The elections will be held at the General Assembly in Turin on 2 June. I lead the organization over 12 years and we managed to get many things, Ilyumjinov stressed.
According to Ilyumjinov, holding of the world championship on knock-out system, which was supported by him, justified hopes. FIDE also started attach great attention to the big army of ordinary chess-players, who was not spoilt with the participation in different elite tournaments. Sometimes grand masters, won chess crowns, regard it as their property and seek to put forward conditions at the participation in different tournaments. It is our biggest problem, Ilyumjinov stressed.
He also underlined that some perspective chess-players appeared in Azerbaijan, who were able to gain new successes. Several years ago Teymur Rajabov demonstrated brilliant play at the world championship in Libya and ranked 3rd. Shahriyar Mammadyarov also started to play in the high level. Thus, they have great future, the President of FIDE concluded.
