Building of correctional institutions of modern type started in the regions of Azerbaijan, deputy Justice Minister Vilayat Zahirov said in a statement during the yesterdays meeting of the Chief Department on court decisions enforcement under the Justice Ministry, the press service of the Azerbaijan Justice Ministry told Trend.
Zahirov noted large-scale and comprehensive reforms are underway in the country. The Justice bodies, especially penitentiary service face important tasks.
The acting head of the Chief Department Nazim Alekberov noted in his address that in 2005 complex measures on improvement in the penitentiary system and removal of shortcomings and delinquencies available in the system have been taken. After some changes in recruitment policy there were large meetings of the Justice Ministry Collegium and the Chief Department council where measures on removal of offences and reasons causing them have been identified, as well as measures on enhancing the discipline.
Above all, during the control over the penitentiary institutions a number of officers have been dismissed and over 50 officials have been discharged from their posts for violations of law and serious defects in their work.
Open competition has been announced for vacancies in the penitentiary system and the medical service based on the sound criteria at the result of which specialists with high professional training and moral qualities have been employed
At the result of the measures taken in the short time the living and maintenance conditions of prisoners, their nourishment and other aspects have changed radically, the discipline has been enhanced, the opportunities for abuses have been averted.
