14 Azeris protestors arrested Georgia

The State Committee on affairs of Azerbaijanis residing abroad interested with a picket arranged by residents of Damya Gerarkhi village of Marneuli district on Wednesday as a sign of protest to the unsettlement of land problems, Nazim Ibrahimov, the chairman of the State Committee on affairs of Azerbaijanis residing abroad, told Trend.

He said that employees of the State Committee contacted to the Union of Azerbaijani Intelligentsia in Georgia and the Azerbaijani embassy in Tbilisi. We should work in this direction to prevent the repetition of such events. The growth of events which could cause clashes should not be allowed. A decree on the establishment of the Azerbaijani-Georgian intergovernmental working group is expected to come out shortly and this body will be involved in the resolution of the problem. It is necessary approach the problems of Azerbaijanis residing in Georgia in a complex way. The working group should not only

state its attitude towards any problem in future, Ibrahimov underlined.

Fizuli Najafov, the deputy chairman of the Department for Georgia at the State Committee, said that as fart as he knows special division participated in the dispersal of the picket. 14 Azerbaijanis, including women, were arrested. The action was staged in connection with the division and privatization of lands. Najafov noted that he participated in the recent march-rally staged by the residents of Marneuli District. The head of the District Administration, Amiran Shubitidze, received a group of protestors and employees of the embassies of Azerbaijan in Georgia. I also attended the meeting. The head of the administration said that the village was located in the mountainous area, the land is dry and unfit for agriculture activities. Shubitidze promised the arable area will be irrigated and late this January the residents will receive additional plots. The process is seemed not to start yet and therefore, the residents held an action with land protests, he stressed.

According to Najafov, the developments show absence of problems in the resolution of the said problems of Azerbaijani population of Georgia, as the Georgian legislation on land reforms does not change anything in favor of Azerbaijanis. He also noted that An action plan of the Azerbaijani-Georgian intergovernmental working group does not include concrete proposals on reconsideration of the Law land and some other changes.
