Gultekin Hadjiyeva: 5000 persons disappeared in Azerbaijan

5000 persons have disappeared in Azerbaijan, member of the Azerbaijani delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Gultekin Hadjiyeva told Trend.

PACE Azerbaijani delegation is trying to introduce the issue of persons disappeared in Azerbaijan on the discussion agenda since 2001, she said. Despite opposition from the Armenian side, we did manage to convince PACE that indifference on that issue may influence the work of the structure negatively, Hadjiyeva said.

She also stated that Leo Platvoyet was appointed as a rapporteur on the issue, after the document on persons disappeared in Azerbaijan was presented to the PACE Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population.

Most of the disappeared persons are no longer alive, she added. This is proven by the facts. But confirmation of this information will solace the relatives. On the other hand it will help to find and prosecute criminals involved in their disappearance, she said, expressing hope that Platvoyet will take an objective position on the issue.

Names of 5000 persons are on the list presented to Platvoyet, she noted. In the list of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) there are 2500 names.

Platvoyet will confirm the list of the disappeared persons in the ICRC headquarters in April. PACE Committee meeting on Migration, Refugees and Population will take place on April 10-13
