In January to February 2006 cargo deliveries by all types of transport conveyances made up 19.6 million tons, 8.9% more than 2005. 54.4% of entire cargo deliveries fell on private sector.

In January to February 2006 the cargo turnover of the transport sector grew 16.7% as compared to 2005 and comprised 4.3 billion ton per km.

The aggregate amount of passenger transportation grew 5.2% and made up 163.9 million men. In this period 84.2% of passengers used automobile transport.

In this period the cargo transportation and cargo turnover by automobiles with consideration of physical entities reached 10.1 million tons and 1.2 billion ton/km, rising by 7.2% and 8.8% respectively. The passenger transportation by automobile grew 5.1% and was equal to 138.1m people.

In January deliveries via the Euro-Asian transport corridor made up 3.7 million tons, or 11.4% more than January and makes up 35.25% of the total deliveries. 61% of the cargo transportation falls on railway, 20.7% - automobiles and 18.3% - shipment.

The railway transportation grew 24.2% as compared to 2005 and comprised 4.1 million tons. The cargo turnover of the railway rose 33.1% to 1.6 billion tons/km. At present the EBRD, the World Bank, and ADB came out with an initiative on approval of funds for the railway sector.

The cargo shipping comprised 2.1 million tons with a rise of 0.6% as compared to 2005. The two third part of cargo deliveries fell on oil and oil products, while one third was dry cargo. The cargo turnover grew 2.4%, comprising 537.6 billion ton/km.

The cargo turnover grew 8.9%, comprising 1.2 billion ton/km. Passenger transportation grew 64.2%. In January to February the foreigners used the sea transport for pilgrimage to Mecca.

The Maritime Administration established under the presidential decree covers activities of all agencies owning vessels and operating on the Caspian and in other regions, the government of Azerbaijan has told Trend. It will represent Azerbaijan in international organizations, particularly, in the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and regulate relations between the entities operating in Azerbaijan and beyond its boundaries. This body, in particular, will regulate issues concerning the passage of vessels through the Russias inner waters, the government noted.

Such agency existed based on the Caspian Shipping Company. By establishing the Transport Ministry setting up of the Maritime Administration has been charged to this body. However, till now the agency has not been established.

The Caspian Shipping Company owns currently the vessels: ferries, dry cargo ships, tanker fleet and special vessels. Besides, the vessels are also owned by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (research vessels), В"Caspmornefteflot (vessels for marine operations by the oil companies) and the State Border Service of Azerbaijan. Private companies have their own fishing boats.

In this period oil transportation via oil pipelines dropped 6.4% as compared to 2005 and comprised 2 million tons. Meanwhile, gas transportation via main oil pipelines made up 1.8 million cu m of natural gas, or 23.3% up as compared to 2005. 49% of the transported gas was imported from Russia, which grew 10.3%. The cargo turnover of the main oil pipelines fell 10% and gas pipelines 21.8% as compared to last year.

Passengers transportation via airways grew 6.6% and 162,300 million people, including 6.2% implemented by private sector. However, following rise in prices of aviation fuel some unprofitable flights were closed down.

From 12 February the AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines) State Concern halted Baku-Delhi-Baku and Baku- Karachi-Baku air flights. It is explained by their economic inexpediency, The National Air Company has already stopped Baku-Kabul-Baku flights since 1 February. In future these flights may be resumed again in case of their economic attractiveness

Metro remains to be the popular and profitable. In this period a total of 24.7 million passengers traveled by metro, which is 6.3% up as compared to 2005, the Baku Metro Production Association told Trend. The growth of passenger transportation comprises 10 million every starting from 2000.

The opposite situation was observed in the passenger transportation by trolleybuses. Use of this transport conveyance decreased 3.6 times as compared to 2005and made up 40,300 people.
