GUAM Summit opens in Kiev

A summit of GUAM, a regional organization among Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova, which is to take a resolution on reorganization of the union into an international organization "For Democracy and Development", opened in Kiev on 23 May. Trend reports citing ITAR-TASS that the member-states will sign its charter and joint declaration, as well as an action plan regarding the cooperation, interaction in international organizations and joint measures on combating terror.

Along with GUAM, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania also voiced their readiness to become founders of the organization for "For Democracy and Development".

The Lithuanian president Valdas Adamkus, officials of the US Department of State, as well as UN and OSCE are in attendance as guests.

On the eve of the Summit there were held meetings of the GUAM Council of Foreign Ministers, GUAM-US with the participation of the US high-ranking officials, joint meeting of the economy, energy and transport ministers, as well as heads of the law-enforcement bodies of the GUAM member-states.

After the meeting the economy, energy and transport ministers the Ukrainian Minister for Fuel and Energy, Ivan Plachkov, announced that GUAM member-states agreed upon establishment of the Fuel and Energy Council to strengthen the control over cooperation of the 4 countries in the sphere of fuel and energy in the coordination of actions in issues of the energy policy and security. Moreover, Plachkov noted that the gathering discussed Ukraines proposal on the establishment of Pre-Dunay Energy-transport bridge.

In his turn, the polish Economy Minister Petr Borzniak announced that the Polish side initiated attraction of the GUAM to the construction of OdessaBrody oil pipeline to Gdansk.

On Monday evening Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, Ukrainian President Victor Yuscheniko, Polish President Lekh Kachinskiy, Georgian President Mikheal Saakashvili, Bulgarian Vice President Angel Marin discussed the perspectives of GUAM during the informal meeting.
