It is necessary to regard the reformation of CIS from the aspect of expediency, Ilham Aliyev, the Azerbaijani President, said in an interview for the Russian television RTR.
So, it is necessary to define what we want and how we want to see the organization. If we want to see it as a full-fledged organization with all functions, obligatory implementation of the resolution adopted, with a mechanism of control over execution of these resolutions, then it comes as very necessary. If we want to leave CIS as an organization convenient for discussion of different issues, including urgent matters disturbing us, time by time, or to leave it in the format for communication among the heads of state, then it is quite a different thing. Here it is necessary to have a consensus among all countries, Aliyev underscored.
In principle, a process of state building in all post-Soviet countries is compete … It is too late to call our countries as young or newly independent, as it frequently occurs. So every country considers its membership in any organization obviously coming out of private interests. To have membership at any organization means to have rights and benefit them. It is too silly to be in the organization which nit interesting, or in the organization where any of the members is always imposed to pressures. We enter all organizations on our own will, the President emphasized. Azerbaijan regards CIS as a profitable instrument.
Aliyev said the participation of Azerbaijan in different international organization is in favor of Azerbaijan. We participate almost in all specter of political processes. W are also member of the Council of Europe, CIS, the Organization of Islamic Conference, the Organization of Economic Cooperation. We also participate in the process of consolidation of confidence measures in Asia and GUAM. I mean one does not hinder another, but in the contrary it offers Azerbaijan additional chances to encourage its interests.
