EU offers to create joint firefighting capability

During his visit to Baku and Yerevan Peter Semneby, the European Union (EU) special representative for South Caucasus, discussed the fires in the occupied territory of Azerbaijan. Semneby made a statement in an interview for Trend.

It is important to make sure that the current situation with wildfires that continue out of control does not occur again, he noted.

According to Semneby, this is a problem that concerns both sides. Regardless of the status of the conflict and the formal problems involved, he believes that both sides should have an interest in creating a joint firefighting capability. Of course, this will require some kind of international facilitation or support.

EU SR voiced his hope that this could be explored further, because it would address a real need. It could also be a way of creating some contacts and a little confidence between the conflicting parties in an area where they will have to live and work together also in the future.
