Azerbaijan allocates huge investments to improve living conditions for refugees U.N. Higher Commissioner

Today, the primary goal of the U.N. Higher Commissariat on Refugees is to bring to the attention of the world public the information about the situation of refugees in Azerbaijan and assist Azerbaijani government in returning internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their native lands, the U.N. Higher Commissar on Refugees Antonio Guterres told on August 17, Trend reports.

According to him, beginning from last year, the U.N. Higher Commissariat on Refugees exchanged its position in relation with refugees of Azerbaijan. After this, the main role in this process will belong to the government, but in any cases, the Higher Commissariat will pay special attention to the situation of refugees in Azerbaijan, and wants to achieve the solution of the problem, the higher commissioner said.

He noted that the commissariat considers that the solution of the problem may be the returning of IDPs to their native lands. The organization renders humanitarian assistance to many countries around the world, but the situation in Azerbaijan is of other kind. The

assistance of the government is enough qualitative. The government allocates large investments to improve the living conditions of refugees and IDPs. This issue is under the attention of the president of the country, and the best indicator of this attention is the liquidation of tent camps by the end of 2007, Guterres underlined.

Besides, Goterres pointed out that the Higher Commissariat will continue the cooperation with Azerbaijan government. Trainings will be organized for officials. All these demonstrate the close relations between Azerbaijan and Higher Commissariat.

The commissariat supports such cooperation in the developed countries, he underlined, adding that soon Azerbaijan will become a country having high economic development level. then, Azerbaijan will be interesting for migrants and people seeking asylum, he stressed.

Commenting on hiss visit to the regions of Azerbaijan and meetings with IDPs, the commissioner noted that they voiced their desire to return to native lands.

The head of the State Committee on Refugees and IDPs of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov stressed that it needs to prepare a plan with the participation of international donor organizations for returning IDPs to their native lands. It will take nearly $60 mln. The exact figure will be clear after preparation of Great plan on returning of IDPs and conducting of talks, he added.
