Azerbaijan Holds Least Number of Judges in Europe  Azeri Minister

Azerbaijan holds the least number of judges in Europe, the Azerbaijani Minister of Justice Fikrat Mammadov told on October 3, noting that presently there are 4 judges for each thousand people in Azerbaijan, Trend reports.

According to the decision of the Azerbaijani President issued in August 2006, the number of the judges was increased by 50 percent and reached up to 153 judges, the Minister stressed. The selection of the employees for the court system is held on a competition base. Generally 609 persons out of appealing 704 persons participated in the competition. 307 candidates collected more than 60 marks and received access to the next stage of the selection competition.

According to the same order regarding the modernization of the court system, it is also planned to establish courts in the regions Appeal courts and regional courts. According to the Minister, financial resources are demanded to implement these measures. The World Bank and The Government of Japan agreed to render assistance to the juridical system of the country. Within a short time, a project was prepared for the modernization of the court system in the country and we studied the same projects in Slovenia, Poland, Ukraine and Venezuela, Mammadov underlined.

According to him, within the project it is intended to build 17 court buildings and reconstruct other buildings, repair the new building for the Supreme Court and upgrade the material-technical base of the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan. Today the repair of the building of the Supreme Court has already commenced through the finance allocated by the Azerbaijani Government and its technical provision will be realized within the project.
