The reforms currently held in the country's transport sector targeted maintaining discipline, issue of passports, study of the flow of passengers and, the transport system met the contemporary level.

Stable development observed in the transport sector of economy continued in Azerbaijan over the first 8 months of 2006. In January to August 2006 positive tendencies reigned in the transport sector. Cargo deliveries by all types of transport conveyances made up 89.8 million tons, 9.6% more than 2005. 54.5% of entire cargo deliveries fell on private sector.

Cargo deliveries by all types of transport conveyances made up 19.5 million tons, 17.2% more than 2005.

The aggregate amount of passenger transportation grew 5.6% as compared to 2005 and made up 691.7 million men. In this period 84.5% of passengers used automobile transport. The share of automobile transport in the passenger transportation made up 84.6%, while the share of metro was 14.8%.

Over 8 months of 2006 the volume of cargo deliveries comprised 46.8m tons of cargo, or 6.2% more than 2005. The volume of passenger transportation made up 585 million (rose 5.4%). In turns the cargo turnover rose 8.6%, while passenger transportation 7.8%.

In January to July 2006 Azerbaijan imported 15,601 vehicles, or 3.8% down as compared to last year, whilst exceeds the last year figure 28.4% in price.

In this period Azerbaijan imported 3,417 lorries worth $40,692,100, or 6.5% less than last year, but 60% more in price.

Since January to July 2006 Azerbaijan has imported 226 buses with the total value of $4,972,300. the number of buses imported to the country over 7 month of 2006 is 6.1% more than last and 1.3% more than its cost.

Thus, in the first 8 months of 2006 the Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) transported 20.3 million tons of cargo, or 3,973,300 tons more than last year (24.1% more). The volume exceeds the forecast established for this period by 23%. Railway deliveries amounted to In this period, 11,344 million tons of oil and oil products have been transported. In July 1.3 million tons of oil and oil products, which is 20.7% more than last year. Daily oil cargo made up 730 tanks, 105% against the forecast of 693 tanks. Passenger delivery in this period comprised 602.

Thus, in the first 8 months of 2006 the Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) transported 14.2 million tons of cargo, or 2,321 million tons more than last year. In this period, 10.5 million tons of oil and oil products have been transported. Daily oil cargo made up 721.5 tanks, 104.1% against the forecast of 693 tanks. Passenger delivery in this period comprised 3.7m and incomes totaled 14.1m AZN.

The cargo shipping comprised 9.5 million tons with a rise of 7.5% as compared to 2005. The two third of cargo deliveries fell on oil and oil products, while one third was dry cargo. 99.7% of cargo deliveries was implemented under the international operations.

The work of the ferry was ceased for 2 days in the beginning of August due to unfavorable weather conditions, which result in the accumulation of approximately 900 carriages in the direction of Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan at the Baku port on 9 August 2006.

In January to August the volume of cargo processed at the ports of Azerbaijan made up 4.2 million tons, or 10% more than last year. 83% of the entire cargo fell on transit cargo, which increased 4.2%, or 10% more than last year. The amount of import cargo rose 34.1 times and export cargo 1.6 times.

The amount of passenger transportation by this transport rose 10.2% as compared to last year.

In this period oil transportation via oil pipelines rose 0.3% as compared to 2005 and comprised 8.1 million tons.

Passengers transportation via airways grew 8.6% and made up 859,000 million people, including 6.1% implemented by private sector. The increase of passenger transportation by air was linked with preference given by urban citizens to this transport during the simmer holidays. Thus, since the beginning of July the flights carried out by the state air company AZAL in the direction of Turkish resort city Antalia, which increased to thrice a week, was cut to twice a week from 1 to 15 September.

Metro remains to be the popular and profitable. Over the first 8 months a total of 97,545,700 million passengers traveled by metro, against the forecast of 89,400,000 people (9.1% up). In August the passenger transportation 10,475,500 people, against the forecast of 8,900,000 people, which is 17.2% up as compared to 2005. In August a total of 482,800 passengers with privileged rights traveled by metro. Transportation by trolleybuses has been ceased since August.

In January to July 28.1 million tons of cargo has been transported via the Eurasian corridor, which exceeded the last year figure by 8.7% and comprised 36% of entire cargo deliveries to the country.
