Fires in Armenian-occupied Territory of Azerbaijan to be on Focus in Vienna Once Again

A meeting of the Advisory Board of the Environment & Security Initiative (ENVSEC), put forward by UN, OSCE, NATO, UN Environmental Program, the European Commission and the Environment Center, will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 31 October 2006,Trend reports cutting OSCE's statement. The meeting will focus on the ecological situation in the South Caucasus.

Bernard Snoy, Chairman of the ENVSEC initiative, will deliver opening remarks, which will be followed by a presentation made by representatives of East Europe, south-East Europe, Central Asia and South Caucasus.

An international expert group of the OSCE, led by Snoy, visited Nagorno-Karabakh to estimate the ecological damage to the region as a result of the fires. After 10 days of monitoring, the Mission confirmed the fire covered a vast area which caused considerable damage. The expert group stated that in future it will be necessary to strengthen measures, with regional and international co-operation, to prevent the fires.
