Ali Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Minister for Communications & Information Technology, stated on 6 December that Azerfon, the third mobile operator, will set up rendering services in Azerbaijan, Trend reports.
At present the company is involved in the work in the regions. The network of Azerfon has been established in many regions of the country,' he said.
We expected Azerfon to set up its services in Azerbaijan no later than the first quarter of 2007. Any delay by Azerfon is admissible and the commencement of its operation in Azerbaijan will not be later than the first quarter of 2007, the Minister stressed.
Firstly Azerfon will cover the areas of Baku, Absheron, Ganja, Mingachevir, Guba, Lankaran, Ali Bayramly and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In general, Azerfon will cover 80% of the Azerbaijani territory.
The first mobile communications services in the country were rendered by Bakcell, which was founded in 1994. The establishment of another mobile operation, Azercell, in 1996 gave impetus to the development of mobile communication services and the company currently has over 2 mln subscribers.
The community demand for mobile communications has increased daily and the Ministry passed a resolution in December 2005 on the issue of a license for mobile operations on GSM standards and Catel - on CDMA.
