Oktai Hagverdiyev, the Head of Price, Economic and Monetary Policy Department of the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers, informed Trend that the Government of Azerbaijan is eager to resume talks with the Government of Turkmenistan on disputable issue after the establishment of new government in that country.

The perspective for the expansion of future cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan will depend on the future power in government in Turkmenistan.

Taking into consideration the mentality of the people of Turkmenistan, it is difficult to expect any changes in this country. They are fully satisfied with the current regime and President Niyazov perhaps left heirs with similar thoughts, said Hagverdiyev. It is necessary to take into consideration interior and exterior forces.

The countries, such as the Unite States, Iran and Russia, will not miss the opportunities and try to change the situation in their own interests. I exclude essential changes for Azerbaijan, he said.

There are several disputable issues between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, including the Caspian legal status.

The Supreme body of Turkmenistan the People Council will define the date of the presidential elections and consider the candidacies to this post by 26 December.

The President-for-life of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov, died on 21 December from sudden heart stoppage.
