Talat Aliyev, the Azerbaijan Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador, exclusively informed Trend that presently Azerbaijan is a very interesting country for Ukraine both from the aspect of strategic partnership and energy resources. Ukraine is eager to ensure its energy security and find out alternative versions. Mr. Aliyev noted that Russia remains a major source of energy supply for Ukraine.
Ukraine covers only 30% of its energy demand at the expense of its own oil and gas fields, he said, reminding of the similar talks held by Mr. Yanuskovich in Kazakhstan.
The diplomat said that the Ukrainian delegation is arriving to Azerbaijan with some proposals on cooperation. They are particularly concerned with machine-building, aircraft construction, chemistry, petro-chemistry, agro-industrial complex.
The Ambassador said that goods turnover between Azerbaijan and Ukraine made up $300mln in 2006, but there is potential for further development.
Ukrainian delegation led by Prime Minister Victor Yanukovich is arriving to Baku on 26 December at 13.40 [Baku time] with a one-day working visit. Mr. Yanukovich is expected to have one-to-one with his Azerbaijani counterpart Artur Rasizade. Then the governmental delegations of the two countries will hold talks. The Ukrainian Prime Minister is also scheduled to have a meeting with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev.
The delegation will be back to Ukraine this evening, said Mr. Aliyev.
