Georgian President Mikhael Saakashvili said on 7 February 2007 that the project on construction of a new railway route Baku-Tbilisi-Kars is the first grandiose project, which assumes great importance and will benefit all three countries, Trend Correspondent reports. He was addressing a ceremony of signing of a package of documents on cooperation between Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey.

We had several projects in the region and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan main oil export pipeline is the biggest. However, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project makes the geopolitical turnover in our region and opens a new strategic route connecting not only the three counties of the region, but also the countries of Asia and Europe with each other and will become a firm base for the development of our regional cooperation, he said. The Georgian President said that the project is of particular importance for Georgia, because after the blockade by Russia the Georgian railway reached a dead end. Now we will obtain a direct route to Europe, and Asian markets. This is the modification of the ancient Great Silk Route, he said. Today [7 February] we are signing the Tbilisi Declaration and also an agreement on construction of a new railway route Baku-Tbilisi-Kars and it is the prospective project which lays the foundation of future success. It is a serious security for long-term development of each of us and every cou
ntry will benefit it, President Saakashvili said. This is the project which envisages investments worth several million dollars, which will further bring profits in hundred billion dollars, he noted.
