Azerbaijan Agriculture Ministry: FAO Expectations on Grain Crisis in Azerbaijan Unjustified

Ismat Abbasov, Azerbaijan Agriculture Minister, said today that the expectations of the World Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) concerning the possible shortage of corn in Azerbaijan are not justified at all, Trend reports.

According to him, the production of grain-crops in the country in 2006 increased by 2 mln. tons. Today, Azerbaijan need in production of corn is 1,6 mln. tons.

I am confident to say that there is no grain shortage in Azerbaijan and the country will not face it, said Mr. Abbasov.

According to the forecast of FAO, the grain-crops harvest in 2007 will be good, however the anomaly warm weather may cause some countries facing with food crises.

FAO experts say that some 34 countries may face food crises in 2007. Azerbaijan has also been included into this list due to the aridity of its climate.
