Azerbaijan Economic Development Ministry Declines Rumors about New Increase Prices on Energy Carriers

Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan, Baku-Astana /Trend, corr. K. Konyrova, I. Khalilova / The Azerbaijan Economic Development Ministry has refuted rumours concerning the alleged increase in prices on energy carriers (on gasoline, in particular) up to AZN 1 starting from March 1, 2007.

"The rumours about the new increase in the prices on gasoline are nothing but rumours and nothing else," Mikayil Jabbarov, the deputy Azerbaijan's Economic Development Minister, paying his visit to Astana, informed Trend Correspondent to Kazakhstan today. According to him, it is not right to call it increase in prices.

" Azerbaijan is occupied with deep reforms in the energy sector. The key principle which was taken as a basis of the increase in the prices was payback of expenditures spent by economic subjects and facilities," he said.

"The existing prices set taking into account the real expenses of electric power generating companies will allow Azerbaijan to create favourable conditions for private investments to be put in this sector," considers the Azerbaijan official. He explains it by the fact that it becomes advantageous for local and foreign businessmen to put their investments to the energy sector at the existing conditions.

We took economic calculations submitted by the corresponding economic subjects and facilities as a basis at setting the rate of the tariffs.

"The prices on energy carriers had not been viewed in Azerbaijan since 1997. Both the economy and external and domestic factors had changed for this period," considers Mr. Jabbarov.
